Consultation |

Here, surgeon and patient meet for a relaxed but systematic discussion of all aspects of the treatment under consideration. A good surgeon needs to understand her patients goals and objectives. She will review medical history, conduct a physical examination and assess the patient's suitability for the surgery. She will educate and inform the patient about the problem and go on to explain the different ways in which surgery could attempt to solve it. She will then recommend what she considers to be the best procedure to carry out, taking everything into account. She may also supply literature for separate study. |

An explanation of what the operation involves; including the pros and cons and the risks involved; the type of anaesthesia; and time taken for recovery will all be discussed.
During the consultation session a mutual understanding will hopefully develop. Your surgeon should invite you to ask all your questions and air your worries. Her answers will be frank and clear. |
